Press Release July 27th - 07/28/2009 07:52 AM
The Cavaliers didn’t have an answer for a consistent Sparta Millers team on Wednesday, falling to the Millers, 9-6, in Sparta.
Ryan Iverson hit a two-run home run in the third for Eau Claire (30-15) while Soya Aoki was 3-for-4 with an RBI and Eau Claire Memorial Graduate Ben Kincaid finished 2-for-3 with a double.
The Plover Tetradactyl's tagged Cavs starting pitcher Yoshinori Machida for seven runs on eight hits and two walks in just 4-1/3 innings and went on the win 9-7 on Friday night at Carson Park.
Eau Claire had its chances in the early innings.
In the first inning, Soya Aoki singled, then Ty Fadness walked. The pair set in motion the double steal, and were in scoring position for Ben Kincaid who struck out and Ben Sebesta popped up to the second baseman to end the inning with two runners in scoring position.
The Cavaliers had a similar situation in the second. Andy Abromaitis singled and Chase Graskewicz walked.
After an errant pick throw to second by the Tetradactyl’s catcher allowed Abromaitis and Graskewicz into scoring position with no outs.
Alex Burian would single to drive in Abromaitis, but with Ben Otto at the plate, Burian was caught in a rundown on a pick off attempt and was tagged out and Graskewicz tried to score from third but was cut down by a perfect throw to turn a no out runners in scoring position to a two out with no one on base. Otto flew out to end the inning. Eau Claire finished the game with nine runners left on base.
The Cavaliers scored two in the sixth, two more in the seventh, and two more in the ninth, but Plover’s commanding lead held up.
The Cavaliers swept the Addison Braves in a 4 game series over the weekend. Saturday Mark Shaver was the winner in a game shortened to 5 innings by rain 2-0.
With a thin pitching staff and a rare tripleheader on tap Sunday the Eau Claire Cavaliers needed good outings from their starting pitchers.
Tyler Martin gave them a little more than that. The right hand pitcher out of Cardinal Stritch University threw a no hitter in game one of the Wisconsin State League triple header against the Addison Braves at Carson Park, sparking the Cavaliers to a 3-0, 16-3, 3-0 sweep.
Troy Peiffer and Phil Isaksson followed suit for Eau Claire (34-16), which took all four games from the Braves on the weekend.
Martin struck out three while walking four.
Pfeiffer allowed bases loaded double to Shaun Hardy in game two but allowed runners to reach scoring position just twice for the remainder of the second game.
Ty Fadness’ double gave Eau Claire a 5-3 lead in the second inning. Lance Poppy led off the third with a triple and later scored on Ben Sebesta’s double, sparking a five-run inning. The Cavs added six more in the fourth.
Ryan Iverson led off game three with a single and came around to score on an error, giving starter Phil Isaksson all the support he needed.
The Cavaliers take a four game winning streak into Tuesday’s game against the combined team of Latin All Stars and USA Military All Star Traveling Team starting at 6:00 with a military tribute.
